THE CAMBRIDGESHIRE
PLAYERS TOURNAMENT 2006
(Affiliated to Badminton England)

The competitive badminton season in Cambridgeshire got under way with a successful Players Tournament. There was an excellent entry with a high standard of play which bodes well for the Victor-Sports Inter-County Championship.

The final of the Mens Singles was a repeat of the past few years with Kevin Barron retaining his title. He again defeated Mohammed Mustafa with a scoreline of 21-6 21-23 21-15. The second end fluctuated before Mustafa edged home but the final end was dominated by Barron which enabled him to retain his title.

The Ladies Singles was once more dominated by Olga Bryant, the holder of the title for several years. In the final she beat her County partner Natalie Davey by 21-15 21-5. They then teamed up to take the Ladies Doubles title. In the deciding match after losing the second end and trailing in the third end, they defeated the scratch pairing of Sayuri Iida and Katherine Young 21-10 14-21 21-16.

There was a surprise in the Mens Doubles with the title going to last seasons County 2nd Team pairing of John Tibbutt and James Wilson who defeated the County 1st Team pair of Jason Bryant and Nick Pratt 14-21 21-12 21-9. There was some consolation for Nick Pratt in the Mixed Doubles when he retained his title with Olga Bryant. In the final they beat Robert Couch and Faye Gregory 23-21 21-18. By her victory in the Mixed Doubles this gave Olga Bryant a well deserved treble.

In the Mens Singles Plate the winner was Ajmal Raza. The Plate for the Mens Doubles went to Mohammed Mustafa and Suny Loy whilst James Wilson and Sharon Chandler won the Mixed Doubles Plate.
