Saturday 1st October saw the Men’s and Ladies Singles Title being fought
at Burwell Sports Centre. Olga Bryant (Hurst) retained the Ladies
Singles Title with relative ease winning all her matches in straight
games, none of her opposition managing more than 5 points against her in
any single game. The Runner up was Anne Watson (Pearl). The Men’s
singles had a high entry and although some good newcomers played well
there was a repeat of last years final between Kevin Barron (Pearl) and
Mohammed Mustaffa (Pearl). The first set was very closely fought with
Kevin Barron pulling back from a 0 – 8 to win 17 -15. He then went on to
win the match.
The next day the Doubles Titles were battled over at the Perse School
Sports Hall. The 10am start began with the Mixed Doubles. Nick Pratt
(Pearl) and Olga Bryant retained their title dominating the competition,
runners up Sharon Chander (Comberton) and Ian Beckett (Comberton)
failing to offer much resistance against the strong pair.
In the Ladies Doubles, a disappointing entry meant a round robin format
was used with all the pairs playing each other. With the defending
champions absent The Title was up for grabs. All pairs were fairly
evening matched and the title came down to a ‘games for and against’
count. Dawn Butterfield and Sandra Ashcroft (both Ely Vic) became the
new title holders with Sharon Chandler and Anne Watson runners up.
The Men’s Doubles entry was in stark contrast with a capacity entry. The
level of play was high and even first round matches were a battle for
most pairs, however the existing title holders Beckett and Pratt made it
to the final without loosing a game as did their opposition Rob Couch
(St Ives) and David Westmoreland. The first end was a long and hard with
the challengers eventually winning 15-12. With their confidence high
they went on to win the Title of Men’s Double Champions 2005.
